Hidden player stats: a theory (29/08/2018 22:40)

Hidden player stats theory

(Part of a) Post by Spinner on 11:12 24.08.2018 in Thread (THREAD:209277) :

All players have a hidden stat called "temper". Naturally, it doesn't take much time to learn if this is high or low when you use the player regularly.
But temper is not used very much, only in a few situations. But when it IS used, a high stat means the player can decide to "make things personal".
So, while temper is a factor in some situations, there are two stats that is very important when it comes to cards..And that is actually speed and perception. If player A has a lower speed/perception than player B, the chance is greater that he will enter the duel a bit late, increasing the chance of a foul. And a card. Think about it, it increases the chance that he will only reach the player, and not the ball. In these cases, perception is used to checking "how fast player A is aware of the situation" and the speed is used to determine "how fast does he get to the duel"..Then Player B gets his check on the speed stat as well, and the difference in speed between them.

There IS ofc a random element in here as well, because two fouls between the two players will be different from time to time, and also the referees are not always identical.

Using statistics, the simulator is behaving according to specs from what I can tell, but of course there can, AND WILL, be seasons where one manager feels he has been very unlucky with cards...Just like there will be seasons where a lot of such margins go against you...Hitting the post in stead of the net, injuries, cards, a couple of unlucky draws due top a good goalie on the other side etc. We all experience it, and it's part of football...

My theory on Hidden player stats

Disclaimer: This is a theory and is likely to be 33% to 99.998% off of the truth. And, while hidden player stats might play a role, the regular player stats like for example speed and perception play an important role too in any match situation.

At this time I can image there are hidden player stats in ML like:
  • Potential: How likely a player is going to gain from training, but not really hidden because it can be detected through scouting.

  • Temper: How likely a player is going to get angry. Spinner: But temper is not used very much, only in a few situations. But when it IS used, a high stat means the player can decide to "make things personal".

  • Ball runner: How likely a player is going to dribble.

  • Shooter: How likely a player is going to take a direct shot on goal.

  • Injury resistance: How likely a player is not going to get injured.

  • Smart positioning: Natural ability for (smart) positioning and avoiding the offside trap. Note: Positioning will probably be mostly perception/speed based. Not sure if there are players with a positioning bonus aside from speed/perception.

  • Natural passing ability: Natural ability for taking free kicks, corners, playing crosses. Note: Free kicks, corners, playing crosses will probably be mostly passing based. Might get better when done often.

  • Through ball ability: Can a player play through balls yes or no.

  • Hard ball ability: Can a player play hard balls yes or no.

  • Runs and run timing: Natural ability for timing and performing runs without the ball.

  • Natural gainer: How likely a player is going to gain in primary attributes. You can see this from where most gains go for a player, i.e. if most gains for an attacker go to goalkeeping every season this hidden player stat is low, if most gains for an attacker go to shooting, perception, speed or heading every season, this is high.

  • Troublesome attribute(s): Are there attributes for the player which are (very) difficult to train?

  • Consistency: How likely a player is going to perform at his best. Note: This might get better with age.

  • Mentality: How likely a player is going to perform extraordinary in important CL KO, SU KO, CWC KO, player cup and league cup matches or matches against (much) better teams.

  • Form: Form of the player in the current season.

  • Preferred position: left, center or right. If you play a player in a position other than the preferred position the player will perform worse and make more fouls.

I think the special ability of a player comes on top of these hidden stats.

Player example

I will rate a player's hidden stats on a scale zero to five (0 - 5), based on the many match reports I've read.

I'll also provide some match report fragments as an example.

ronald_koeman_hidden_player_stats

Potential: 5

He's a 5 star player, so he'll likely gain more from training.

Temper: 3

He gets quite a few cards, not too many, but a bit more than an average player.

Ball runner: 1

He dribbles only once in a while.

Shooter: 2

He sometimes shoots from distance but not a lot. But when he does he shoots with power thanks to his DS Distance Shooter special ability!

Injury resistance: ?

I haven't seen him get injured, but I haven't spotted many occasions where he could get injured, possibly because of his good positioning.

Smart positioning: 0

His high speed and good perception gives him an advantage in positioning. It might be some players are naturally better at positioning, but if there's such a thing then he doesn't have it.

Natural passing ability: 3

He has 99 passing, so this will help him a lot when taking free kicks, corners and crossing. But he does a better job at free kicks, corners and crossing than most other players with 98 or 99 passing.

Through ball abil: 2

He's played a briljant through ball in the last match.

Runs and run timing: 0

Haven't seen him do runs without the ball. He's more of a man of the pass.

Natural gainer: 1

He gains well and luckily a bit more in primary stats than others.

Consistency: 2

He's not very consistent, although his consistency seems to get better with age.

Mentality: 1

Against better teams he sometimes excels.

Form: 3

He performs pretty well this season, but he can do even better.

Just for fun... Wally Waldo II hidden player stats

 wally_waldo_ii_hidden_player_stats

Potential: 2.5 (2.5 star player)

Temper: 1

Ball runner: 2

Shooter: 1

Injury resistance: ?

Smart positioning: 0

Natural passing ability: 2

His corners are quite good.

Through ball ability: ?

Runs and run timing: ?

Natural gainer: 0

Consistency: 4

Mentality: 5

He excels in matches against really tough opponents. The better the opponent, the better Wally performs!

Form: 2
